  Weather and Insects

Learn how weather affects insects, than scroll down to see what your weather is like.

Weather conditions in Michigan can be cold and colder, hot and humid, dry, or wet, rainy and just plain ugly. Changing weather will alter the foraging habits of many insects. Changing conditions prompt pests to invade your home in search of  food, water and shelter. Find out how Michigan weather is affecting the insects in your yard, and use our suggestions to help maintain an insect free home.

Wet, rainy and just plain ugly

Watch out for: Ants, Spiders, Wasps

Homeowner Tip: Keep window screens on tightly to keep out wasps, clean up spilled food and crumbs before foraging ants come and clean up for you.

Why? Moisture is just like steroids for insects, it helps give them what they need to rapidly grow their colony size, which means more insects foraging for food.  Ants, in particular, reproduce faster when it's humid.

Additional pests mean a greater need for more food sources.  In turn, their foraging area becomes wider and wider. In many cases this will lead them directly to your home.

When it's raining and pouring the soil will swell with water and cause insects, especially ants, to search for a safer area...dry ground. Insects will seek out the closest area that isn't flooded and provides them with adequate shelter. If your home isn't flooded watch out for uninvited roomates, because ants are able to move entire colonies with speed and precision.

Solution: Call Zebra Pest Control to utilize our inside/out treatment for ants and other foraging pests.

Dry Conditions

Watch out for: Ants, centipedes/millipedes, earwigs, pillbugs/sowbugs and spiders

Homeowner Tip: Seal and Caulk openings and cracks of home.

Why? When it rains insects multiply and when it's dry they come knocking on your door in search of water. O.k., they don't knock they just come on in. When it comes to an insects survival they will get water from any source possible and in many cases that is in your home. Millipedes especially like the cool damp, cool areas of basements and, in many cases, will travel from your yard in huge numbers and find a home in your house (we have seen hundreds at a time). In fact, other pest control companies are reporting sightings of thousands.

Solution: Call Zebra Pest Control to utilize our perimeter barrier treatments to help stop problems before they occur.

Cold and Colder

Watch out for: Mice, Rats, Asian Beetles, Boxelder Bugs, silverfish

Homeowner Tip: Do not store firewood near home, make sure screens around the foundation and attic vents are tightly sealed.

Why? In Michigan when it gets cold, it really gets cold. When the thermometer drops outside overwintering pests will seek a nice warm house. Typically, overwintering pests will search for areas that are secluded in the home such as cracks, crevices, wall voids and attics.

Solution: Call Zebra Pest control to utilize our crack and crevice treatments.

As you can see weather directly affects insects and their foraging for food and search for shelter. As we need food, water and shelter, so do insects. Zebra Pest Control technicians are highly trained in preventing insect problems before they begin, whatever the weather.
